Teaching

I am a faculty member of the undergraduate and graduate programs of the School of Nursing. My training has been in health systems research, organizational behaviour, health care management and health policy. I have taught undergraduate and graduate courses on management and leadership in health care, health care policy and health care systems. Currently, I am engaged in online teaching for integration of learning in clinical contexts.

Research

My primary area of research is reflected in a range of collaborative studies, undergraduate projects and graduate theses that focused on motivational factors affecting individual and organizational behaviour in health care contexts. Included are studies and publications on motivation to transfer learning; factors that promote team decision making and functioning; the influence of goal orientation and commitment on staff retention; and the effect of conflict resolution strategies in managing organizational conflict. Evaluative research methods have been used in many undergraduate projects that assessed organizational issues in health care organizations. Findings have been tested and adopted in various local agencies. A secondary focus of research is on the effect of computer technology on learning. My current research examines the effect of online teaching on inquiry learning and critical thinking in clinical contexts.

Service

My current service includes membership in the Academy of Management as a journal referee for the Divisions of Health Care Management and Organizational Behaviour. I review textbooks for publishing companies, as well as grant proposals for a major granting body in Ontario. I am a member of the Canadian Evaluation Society and serve as a Director of Ryandale Shelter for the Homeless in Kingston. Recently, I served on the College of Nurses’ of Ontario Academic Advisory Group and Queen’s University Internal Review Committee.
