Graduate Student Supervision

I am currently accepting MNSc and PhD students in the area of chronic disease management, wound care, and gerontological nursing.

My philosophy of teaching is shaped by my previous experiences as a learner, an educator, an advanced practice nurse and a nursing administrator. My primary role as an educator is to foster independent thinking, cultivate problem-solving skills, translate knowledge into practice, and provide learning experiences that are interactive and contextual based.  I am currently teaching gerontological nursing and intermediate statistics.  I am also teaching a public policy course in the Master of Science in Healthcare Quality MSc(HQ) program and critical appraisal of aging theories in the Aging and Health program at the School of Rehabilitation.

My research interests focus on enhancing chronic disease self-management, developing quality benchmarks for wound management, and implementing best practices for the care older persons. I received the 2012 International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) Early Career Research Award for his work in exploring the issue of inflammatory response and pain in chronic wounds. I am a recipient of an Early Researcher Award 2014-2019 from the Ministry of Research and Innovation. This award allows me to lead the development and evaluation of an online community to promote self-management of diabetes and related foot complications.   My projects fall under the Queen’s Nursing and Health Research clusters of Populations with Complex Health Conditions and Health Care Quality.

I am an adjunct research professor at the Western University teaching for their Masters of Clinical Science in Wound Healing program.  I am the Web Editor for Advances in Skin and Wound Care journal web site.  In addition to my participation on several editorial boards including World Council of Enterostomal therapy Journal, International Wound Journal, and International Journal of Lower Extremity Wounds, I also serve on a number of expert panels and advisory boards including the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario for the development of best practice guideline for the prevention and management of pressure injuries.
