What is a Nurse Practitioner?

We are pleased to announce that the Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program is now offered at 2 locations: Queen's University and our satellite site through Trent University.

What is the PHCNP Program?

Description

Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioners (NP-PHC) provide care to individuals and families in various health care settings.  The holistic care provided by NPs, typically with the support of a health care team, includes diagnosis and management of common health conditions and diseases, health promotion, disease prevention and wellness care for individuals, families and communities.

Queen’s University offers a Nurse Practitioner certificate program as part of the consortium of nine universities under the Council of Ontario University Programs in Nursing (COUPN).  For additional information about the Ontario Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner program, please click on this link  http://np-education.ca

There is a strong component of distance education and a computer with Internet access is required.  Each of the clinical courses – AHAD and Therapeutics – has a mandatory three hour tutorial on-site at Queen’s University.  Students are required to be on-site for tutorial twice a month during the Integrative Practicum course. Courses may be taken on campus at Queen's University or at our new satellite site though Trent University.

Clinical placements typically occur within Kingston and communities within an hour's
drive of Queen's, Our placement catchment area covers an area along the north shore
of Lake Ontario from Peterborough to Smiths Falls to Brockville. As students are
responsible for transportation to and from clinical placements, a vehicle will be
necessary.

The program can be taken either full-time or part-time.
