Accepting MScN and Nursing PhD students in the broad areas of Indigenous health care and Nurse Practitioner pedagogy.
I believe that learning is supported through a flexible strengths-based approach that should inspire creativity and critical thinking that strives beyond the conventional. Learning that is reciprocal and respects the ways of being and knowing of the learner and educator motivates my pedagogical position. In prioritizing introspective dialogue, there is the potential for perspectives to transform endlessly in nonlinear ways towards fostering compassion and caring. Learning in this manner is vital in my view to realizing responsibility and in fostering equity and social justice. This approach also extends to supporting accessibility to education through innovative synchronous and asynchronous technologies. I see the potential in distance learning opportunities that may sustain students within relational cultural contexts and home communities whilst contributing to their families and communities in meaningful ways. In this regard, I have been involved as an Adjunct Lecturer in the Ontario Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program online Roles in the and Responsibilities course at Queen’s University since 2011 and also currently as Course Professor Lead. In addition, having spent over 18 years in active practice within a psychiatric health care setting I am particularly drawn towards mental health and addictions education and practice. During the 2018 / 2019 fall and winter terms I taught N325: Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing.
Many of my research interests have surfaced through my Nursing and Nurse Practitioner experiences in education, mental health care and within First Nation communities. Previously, I have researched the gendered and hierarchical history that has influenced mental health and psychiatric Nursing and Nurse Practitioner practice and education within the Canadian context. Additionally, I have engaged within hermeneutical and interpretative approaches in studying Nurse Practitioner pedagogy and cultural safety competencies. My research has also involved learning Indigenous and Anishinaabe epistemologies and methodologies and autoethnography. In tandem with goals towards equitable health care and education, my unfolding dissertation research has focused on a unique methodology arising within the context of Chronic Kidney Disease, dialysis and organ donation in a First Nation community. In 2019, I was awarded the Allied Research Grant from the Kidney Foundation of Canada for the research project entitled, Circles towards Indigenous solutions for kidney health: a strength-based approach.
