Program Funding

Financial assistance is available to thesis-based MNSc students from sources internal and external to Queen’s University. Eligible full-time students in good standing normally receive a Queen’s Graduate Award (QGA) of approximately $4,000 per year in their first and second years. Thanks to the generosity of School of Nursing benefactors, there are also a small number of departmental awards available each year, based on academic merit.

All graduate nursing students may apply for Teaching Assistantships (TA) within the School of Nursing and for Research Assistantships (RA) funded by faculty grants. Students with funding guarantees receive preference for these positions. Research Assistantships and Teaching Assistantships are limited to 10 hours per week. Opportunities are posted at https://nursing.queensu.ca/about/careers. Faculty members may also provide funding support through a Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF), where the student’s thesis research aligns with the terms of the grant.

There is an expectation that all students apply for federal, provincial, and foundation fellowships, grants and awards for which they are eligible. Those who have applied for external fellowships such as Ontario Graduate Scholarship, CIHR, or SSHRC are considered for Queen's fellowships without further application. Incoming students who receive federal tri-agency awards are automatically provided a $5,000 top-up award by Queen’s. Students are also encouraged to seek out funding opportunities from employers and professional associations.

Thanks to the generosity of School of Nursing benefactors, there are also a small number of departmental awards available each year, based on academic merit. For recipients of major external scholarships, support from internal funding sources will be reduced.
