The Queen's Collaboration for Health Care Quality offers comprehensive systematic review training (CSRT) featuring the JBI methodology for evidence synthesis. This 5 day, full day (9am - 5pm EST) workshop is designed to prepare health sciences researchers, clinicians, librarians, graduate students and other individuals involved in quality and practice portfolios to develop, conduct, and report systematic reviews of evidence. Certified reviewers may become authorized reviewers in the Institute’s peer reviewed journal, the JBI Database of Systematic Reviews and Implementation Reports (JBISRIR), which is indexed in Embase, Scopus, Mosby’s Index (Elsevier), CINAHL (EBSCO) and Medline.
This activity-driven program includes rigorous methods and tools to appraise and synthesize evidence from research literature and documentary sources. Participants gain hands-on experience in drafting a systematic review protocol, including definition of the question(s) and search, retrieval and selection of research for the review. You will critically analyze sample quantitative and qualitative research and expert opinion papers as part of the review process, and be introduced to JBI software for performing meta-analysis and meta-synthesis of selected studies. Participants also examine the nature of evidence and its role in healthcare to further understand how evidence transfers into health care practice.
The workshop has three Modules:
- Module 1 (Apr 21): Introduction to Evidence-Based Healthcare
- Module 2 (Apr 24, Apr 25): The Systematic Review of Evidence Generated through Quantitative Research
- Module 3 (Apr 27, Apr 28): The Systematic Review of Evidence Generated by Qualitative Research, Narrative and Text
Participants learn to:
- Use JBI software tools to draft a systematic review protocol, including identifying a question, searching, retrieving and selecting research for the review
- Critically appraise sample quantitative and qualitative research and text and opinion as part of the review process
- Use JBI software to perform a meta-analysis and meta-synthesis of selected studies
Sessions include:
- Overview of Knowledge to Action
- Overview of Evidence Based Practice
- Designing Protocols for Systematic Review
- Systematic Review of Quantitative Evidence
- Systematic Review of Qualitative Evidence
- Systematic Review of Text and Opinion
- Christina Godfrey, RN, PhD, Associate Professor, Co-Director and Senior Methodologist, QcHcQ

- Re: travel visas: This 5-day workshop is a privately managed certification course administered by JBI and delivered by certified JBI trainers. Full attendance is required for successful completion and certification as a systematic review author by JBI. The course is not part of the Queen’s University School of Nursing academic program. Applicants do not qualify for a working permit or study permit on the basis of this course.
Determine if you are from a visa-exempt country or whether you will require travel authorization. Applicants from countries who require a ‘visitor visa’ will need a letter of invitation from QcHcQ. The letter of invitation outlines the contents of the 5-day course and provides contact information for QcHcQ. Applicants are entirely responsible for their course fee, travel and accommodation expenses, insurance and incidental costs for the visit. Please note: Enrolment is limited and payment in full is required to confirm acceptance in program.
IMPORTANT! Please allow sufficient time to process a travel visa – some countries require 60-90 days or more. Visa application information is available at: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/offices/vac.asp
The GRADE approach (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) reflects ‘best practice’ in terms of clinical guideline development and has been endorsed by organisations across the globe.
The 1-day GRADE workshop, led by the Director of the JBI Adelaide Grade Center, Associate Professor Zachary Munn, is designed for systematic reviewers, guideline developers and others wanting to learn more about GRADE methodology, particularly the creation of Summary of Findings tables and Evidence Profiles.
The workshop includes information on the theory of GRADE along with hands-on activities.
* Payment is required before registration can be confirmed. Class size is limited.
See tabs below for more information about the workshop and CONTACT US at QchcQ@queensu.ca if you have questions.
The workshop will be offered in person only, at Queen's University campus. Room TBD.
It will run from 9 am to 4:30 pm.
The JBI GRADE workshop explores the theories and concepts relating to GRADE and the development of Summary of Findings tables and Evidence Profiles, and trustworthy recommendations in guidelines. This workshop equips participants with the knowledge and tools to successfully use GRADE as part of a systematic review, Health Technology Assessment or guideline development process.
Application of GRADE and using hands-on activities are a focus of this workshop. During the workshop participants:
- are introduced to the work of the GRADE Working Group
- learn the rationale behind the GRADE approach
- gain understanding of the key domains to consider when assessing certainty of the evidence
- experience hands-on developing Summary of Findings tables/Evidence Profiles
- learn the GRADE approach to developing recommendations and the Evidence to Decision Framework
- find out how to access additional resources for guidance following the workshop.
