Graduate Student Supervision
I am currently accepting MNSc and PhD students in the area of chronic disease management, wound care, and gerontological nursing.
Teaching
My philosophy of teaching is shaped by my previous experiences as a learner, an educator, a preceptor/mentor, an advanced practice nurse and a nursing leader. I encourage student-centered learning by allowing students to share in decisions, believing in their capacity to lead, and remembering how it feels to learn. Recognizing nursing as a practice discipline that is founded upon empirical, personal, ethical, and aesthetic ways of knowing, one of my primary roles as an educator is to instill a spirit of inquiry, cultivate problem-solving skills, demonstrate how knowledge is translated into practice, and provide learning experiences that are interactive and contextual based. What I consider to be a key outcome of effective nursing education is the students’ ability to apply critical thinking skills and draw on a wide breadth of knowledge to problem solve.
Research
My research interests focus on people living with chronic Conditions and Health Care Quality. I am particularly interested in using innovative technologies to enhance chronic disease self-management, developing quality benchmarks for wound management, and implementing best practices for the care older persons.
