Like many graduate students over the past year, Health Quality (HQ) Programs doctoral student Katelyn Balchin found her research plans impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally intending to travel to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2020, as part of an internship opportunity with Optum Healthcare, instead Katelyn and the Optum team had to get creative with how they virtually connected to complete their projects.

We know nursing care is critical during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also know that nurses save lives when they practice cultural humility and safety. Racism and discrimination is harmful to everyone, and health care needs Cultural Safety and humility just as it needs that defibrillator or dialysis machine. Nurses, together with all health care professionals, need to work together to further equity, diversity, and inclusion for everyone.

As we face the global health worker shortage, Nursing Schools will play a critical role in developing innovative solutions.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that by 2030 there will be a global shortage of approximately 18 million health workers – 20% of the workforce needed to maintain healthcare systems. As this prediction came prior to the COVID-19 crisis, these numbers may have risen.

Non-Pharmacological Therapies (NPTs) are key components in the wellbeing, health and comprehensive care of individuals suffering from a broad spectrum of chronic health conditions. NPTs is a broad term which covers a spectrum of typically non-invasive practices, from physiotherapy and occupational therapy to counseling and other psychological support services. However, few funding options are available to assist Ontarians with limited income sources or healthcare benefits access these therapies.
